My maternal Grandmother Grace Lulu Wescott was the daughter of George S Wescott and Almira B Dickinson.
Grace was the youngest of three girls born Jul 30 1886 in Norridgewalk Me. Laura was her older sister and Mabel the next.
Grace grew up in Madison Maine, on Old Point Ave.
Her dad George, My great grandfather, worked at the woolen mills in Madison. I believe George's middle initial S to be Seavey after his mother Martha Ann Seavey, as he was the oldest and his other siblings have middle names after surnames.
I believe Grace's middle name Lulu to be after her maternal grandmother Lucy Blanchard Bailey.
Grace left Maine and married Francis Charles Birks in Bathurst New Brunswick Canada (Glouster Co. ) on Aug 8 1910 at the age of 24. There she had her first child Dorothy.
Grace and Charles returned back to the states and had 5 more children, Catherine, named after his sister , Gertrude, John, Joseph, Thomas Bernard (named after the poet)..
Grace became pregnant with my mother Frances in 1923, while living in Saugus Ma. On March 12 , 1924 My Grandfather Francis became ill and passed away 5 months shy of the birth of his youngest child Frances. My mom is named after him.
My Nana, Grace was left to raise 7 children, ages 13 down to an infant.
My grandfather Francis was buried in the family plot of his mother Mary's family Biggy, in the Holy Cross cemetary in Malden Ma.
My Nana lived to the age of 79. She lived off and on with my Aunt Dot and me. She loved Spruce gum and playing cards with me, also water and the neck of the turkey.
I was only 7 when she died of a snapped heart valveon Nov 9th 1965 the day the lights went out in the North East. I am lucky to remember her so clearly.
Grace is buried in St Josephs Cemetary in W. Roxbury Ma.
I carry Nana in my heart every day.
